Essays on the virtues and values of reading and study for self improvement, dedicated to the Duke of Sutherland.  The author was a member of the bar and this was the final of several books he published.  Its a collection of essays gleaned from wide reading in a vast library, with the hope of imparting life lessons and a bit of amusement to the reader, a sincere effort without hope of financial rewards, which were not needed.  The themes are on proofs of God, morality, ethics, religion, household, relationships, etc.
Profusely added footnotes from Shakespeare, Dickens, Wilberforce, Burke, Greek philosophers, Bacon, letters, poetry, the bible, sermons and a host of historical and current writers, etc.  Perhaps an early work in the genre of self-improvement, existence of God, Value of Christianity, support of morality to the family and society, and wisdom.
